Meet Our Pups!

Jacob the Shepherd Pup Jacob the Shepherd Pup
Such a Sweet Face
Jacob aka 'Jake' is a purebred Anatolian Shepherd Dog, and Parham Farms
official livestock guardian. Jake came to Parham Farms May 3, 2008 at the
tender age of 8 weeks. He lives in the 300' x 75' pen with the does, he was
born with and has lived with goats and sheep his entire life. He already
thinks that he is a goat, Cookie-Doe has trained him well to respect &
defer to her as the "Queen." Jacob is still a little guy, he will
eventually grow to be 150 lbs or more.

We never intended to have six dogs, five HOUSE dogs. No person in
their right mind would plan for that. It all started with Nestle,
a beautiful Chocolate Lab. Nestle came to us in the summer of 2002.
He was small enough to fit in Ken's work boot. He loved to retrieve
from the very beginning. Soon, our arms grew sore from throwing his
"ducky" across the yard.

Nestle was lonely for his little buddy Quita my mother's chihuahua.
Quita had raised Nestle since he was 8 wks old and when he was a year
and a half old, we (finally) moved into our house, leaving poor Nestle
with no playmate. A few months later we found Freckles, a Jack Russell mix
with a HUGE attitude. She had no problem whatsoever taking over the entire
household. Freckles is the "pack Leader" She may be the smallest we have, but
she certainly is the boss & family spokesdog.

Now everyone was happy - EXCEPT Julie. Zach slept with Nestle
even though he was Ken's dog. Freckles slept in our bed. Julie had no
to snuggle up to at night. So predictably, a few months later we adopted
Oreo, a Rat Terrier, from a rescue near Savannah, TN.

I thought this is it, everything is good. But little did I know that Ken
had been taking the kids to the Animal Shelter behind my back. Once he
found out what a "kill shelter" was, he was there every week. Soon they
found a little pup that they decided to approach me about. It was pure genius.
They took me out to dinner. On the way there (about a 30 minute drive) they began
to tell me about the tiny little puppy. They were sure it would be no bigger
than a beagle and "it needs us." I was being emotionally blackmailed
and it worked. Now, Nilla is a 65lb lab mix (so much for small puppies.)
Nilla belongs to Zach, now he sleeps with 2 pups. And I am done with
puppies, we have enough, too much !!!!

Then Sam wanders into the yard. He is a beautiful purebred Basset puppy.
Sam was young, had well clipped nails, and a collar. I was sure someone
would answer the ads in the local paper or the lost dog websites. NOPE!!!!
Sam's just sort of staying here. I am not ready to admit that I have five dogs,
but he is welcome to stay as long as he likes. Now that he is housebroken,
I might even be disappointed should his "people" find us and want him back.
I DIDN'T type that online, Did I?
In February of 2011, Sam went to live with our friend Mary Ann, she'd lost her
Basset Baby a year before to old age. Sam can't take his place, but he's sure
going to give Mary Ann all the love in his heart :) and she's already smitten with him

What's this? We should be done now, that was five - RIGHT?
Does this mean that there's an extra pup? Well, an 8-month old female
German Shepherd that we called "Eva" came to stay with us for a little
while. Eva was wandering down the road in front of our place, she
was drinking from mud puddles looking very tired and skinny. We called
the local SPCA but they were overcrowded & wouldn't take her in. Our
other options were to let her continue to wander in the road, or take
her to an animal shelter nearby that would put her to sleep if she wasn't
adopted in 10 days. So we took her in. We took her to the vet for shots,
to check for heartworms, etc... and start her on heartworm preventative.
She's a very intelligent dog. She learned the routine here quickly. Ken
trained her to obey basic commands while we searched for a rescue
organization that would take her. Eventually she was taken in by
Mid-South Shepherd Rescue & was immediately adopted. (I think it may
have been by one of the Rescue volunteers - Eva was just too loveable.)
Eva may not live at Parham Farms anymore, but she will always be
in our hearts, Ken especially loved Eva, if she had gotten along well
with Freckles, Eva would have found her furever home right here.
